Specification of word patterns
Parameter settings apply for all the words entered during the search.
- Word initials:
The word entered gives only the beginning of the words to search, any other letter can stand afterwards. There is an invisible wildcard sign * at the end of the words, e.g.: abc*
- Exact words:
You search exactly for the entered word, no other letters can stand after and before the word only if you use wildcard characters.
- Word parts:
You give the middle of the words you search for with the word entered. Any other letters can stand in front of and after the word. There are invisible wildcard signs * at the beginning and at the end of the words, e.g.: *abc*
Search with accents
Parameter settings apply for all the words entered during the search.
- Search with accents:
Accents are considered during the search. The program searches with respect to the accents of the words entered. There are no accents in English but there are accents in several European languages. E.g.: a → á, e → é
- Search without accents:
Accents are not considered during the search. The program searches without respect to the accents of the words entered. It can be useful with words where vowels change in conjugation e.g.: szolga – szolgát. It can be useful with words whose spelling is different in different Bible translations e.g.: Egyiptom – Égyiptom (with e and é). You can use wildcard signs in these cases as well: e.g.: [eé]gyiptom
Specification of interval
The program always searches in the chosen Bible translation displayed on the panel. You specify the interval with this parameter:
- Whole Bible:
The program searches in the whole translation chosen.
- Old Testament:
The program searches only in the Old Testament part of the translation chosen.
- New Testament:
The program searches only in the New Testament part of the translation chosen.
David
The results contain the word “David”
David Jonathan
The results contain the words “David” and “Jonathan” wherever they are in the verse in optional order. It shows that you can omit operation word “AND”.
David OR Jonathan
The results contain “David” or “Jonathan”, at least one of them.
Jonathan NOT David
The results contain “Jonathan” but do not contain “David”.
David <VERSE 5>AND Jonathan
The results contain the words “David” and “Jonathan” within 5 verses.
Jonathan <VERSE 5>AND NOT David
The results contain the word “Jonathan” but “David” is not there within 5 verses.
(David OR Jonathan) Saul
The results contain the words “David” or “Jonathan” and the word “Saul” as well in the same verse.
(David <VERSE 2>AND Jonathan) OR (David <VERSE 5>AND Saul)
The search results contain words “David” and “Jonathan” within 2 verses or the words “David” and “Saul” within 5 verses.
You have to put the abbreviation of the Bible translation you want to search in into angle brackets (less than, greater than signs) in front of the word you search for. Keep in mind that there might be a slight difference in the verse numbers especially in the book of Psalms where there is often 1 verse difference in numbering. You can combine this search with the specification of verse distance.
E.g.:
soul AND <KJV>spirit
The translation selected contains the word “soul”, but the the same verse in the English KJV (King James Version) contains the word “spirit”.
mind <VERS 1>AND <KJV>heart
The translation selected contains the word “mind” but within 1 verse distance the English KJV (King James Version) uses the word “heart”.
Strong numbers indicate the numbers of the word roots in the original Greek and Hebrew Bible.
The advantage of searching by Strong numbers is that the conjugation and the words used in the given translation have no influence on the search as it always searches the Greek/Hebrew words belonging to the given Strong number.
When you use Strong numbers you can not use wildcard signs (e.g. *).
E.g.:
G5547
The results contain the word with Strong number G5547 which is Greek Khristos that is the word Christ, Messiah.
H4899
The results contain the word with Strong number H4899 which is the Hebrew word for Messiah.
G3563 AND NOT heart*
The results contain the word with Strong number G3563 which is the Greek word nus that is the sense of the heart but do not contain the word 'heart' and its conjugated forms.
If you want to give the verse distance between two words or (or word patterns) you search for, you have to use
E.g.:
David <VERS 5>AND Jonathan
The results contain the word “David” but the word “Jonathan” is within 5 verses as well.
